Where I was... Where I am

From September until now, I have learn to build my confidence in presentation and I have improve my writing. ESL 4 had help me alot through out this 4 month and it also help me build my vocabulary and improving my grammars. It also help me shape my speaking and writing skills in english as I had difficult with it before, until I take this class. It also help me come up with idea and strategy to do when I read like, for example: highlighting, summarize, skimming, and re-read.

Creating Effective Prsentations

1. Make sure you understand and knows the topic of your presentation
2. Not alot of sentence and picture ( half-an-half).
3. Do Your Research and Background Info. on your topic
4. Practice your presentation before you present
5. Dont be nervous, be brave and speak clearly (voice volume)
6. Use different color template on the slide to make it interesting for other to see.
7. Colored text, make sure the audience can read your text and the text size not to big and little.
8. Careful on Spelling and Punctuation.
9. Make sure not to get off track on your Topic and Main Idea of the presentation.

How to Write an Effective Paragraph

First sentence when you write in a paragraph should be the Topic.

The sentence should connect to the Thesis Statement and the Topic.

The paragraph always include the topic and then the details and some Linking words.

Must also include Citations or Paraphrase if you take some info. in your research.

B. Some of this steps I use before I started to write my expository essay. First I started to come up with alot of ideas on my topic. then I need to find alot of great source on my topic then I will start to put all my ideas that I got and started to draft the essay and that is where the epository essay begin.

Expository Essay

1) What is the important characteristic of expository essay?

• The first important part about expository essay is narrowing down the thesis in the introduction before the essay.
• The second important part is too support the thesis in the body paragraph by facts, examples and evidence to make the thesis and the paragraph stronger.
• Third important part is how you present your information in the paragraph and is in the "non-biased manner".
• Finally the last important in an essay is never use I or me in an expository essay and alway use third person.

2) 4 organization structure to develop an Expository Essay

• The 1st structure in expository essay is topic, you have to have a topic or idea to start an essay.
• The 2nd structure is time order, are you writing your essay on time events for examples ( past or future).
• The 3rd structure is Space order, is when you write an essay that have a topic which came in order from the beginning to end in the essay.
• Finally the last structure is informative process, "which show how your essay is developing and is it still in progress?"

"What is a Summary?"

Summary- a summary is when you put a long writing and make it short in your own words. It also contain all the important facts but you have to compress them into a short spaces.

• Summary can help you Strengthen your writing skill and help you find the main idea or key point in the story.
• In order to do a summary you first have to read the story slowly and carefully and once you are done, highlight the important things within the story and then you can start to write a summary about it.
• Highlight or underline and take note on it when you reaading a story, so later on you can go back and paraphrase the important facts and put it in your summary.

Strategies in Action

Today I use VIP/MVP and Highlighting in LLED class. we were reading a story and suppose to find the important facts about it and highlighting the thing that you need to know. It help me to know what important in the story and make it easy for me to understand about it.

Strategies

MVP- Most Important Points (ex.) to show the main important point of the sections, overall what is it about that important.
VIP- Very Important Points (ex.) the main idea and section in the story.
QICS- To show and help you connect on what you read and help you to discuss on what your thoughts.
Highlight- underline or color the important word or focus in the reading.
Skimming- to look over the word in the reading and find the important facts.
Summarize- to put all your idea and thought together and sum it up in a paragraph.

Stop-look-Reflect- Blog it! stop to gather strategies and reflect on the 4W's and an H
CLOZE- to highlight text structure of academic texts.
Building Background Knowledge- using simpler readings (Websites) before the academic reading.
Language Starter- "what the author mean by...?" "The author states on page 123 that... it make me think of..." "Stress is defined as..." An example of the presences of stress could be..." hedges...
Graphic Organizer- visual representation of the parts of a concept.
Text Guide- reading guide of what to look for ( definitions, examples, important people, explanations)
